Water, water everywhere. And you want none of it getting on your carpet. Water damage is a nightmare for carpet cleaning.

The fibres of most carpeting can absorb a staggering amount of liquid. On one hand, this can be pretty impressive. On the other, it’s also a problem. That much liquid can cause mould and mildew to form. It can also make walking on the carpet an issue because it “squeezes” some of that water out.

Then there’s the fact that the water can do damage to the plushness and resilience. This is just assuming typical water from a faucet or drinks. If you have contaminated water – like something from a sewage pipe or a flood – then you have it worse.

With that in mind, how do you mend the damage done? Well, here’s a few things you need to do.

First, you’ll want the carpet dried as soon as possible. Letting the water linger just means the damage gets worse.

Mould growth is something you want to prevent. To do that, you’ll want to dry things out as early as you can. This means air circulation, which is achievable if you have some industrial fans and a way to dehumidify the thing.

You’ll want a high-velocity industrial fan. Two is ideal. For weaker fans, just get as many as possible and position them so air flow is encouraged. If the weather is dry, open the windows too.

Take note that if you’ve got padding, you’re looking at replacements. It’s near-impossible to clean, so removal and replacement is your only real option.

From there, you’ll want to shampoo the carpet. Use a commercial product and a sponge. It’s best to use one that’s soft-bristled, especially if the damage is deep and the soiling persistent. You’ll want to go over the carpet in small areas, rinsing with clean water each time.

Don’t reuse the water. Change when it becomes dirty, otherwise, you risk spreading that back on the carpet. Once this is done, go back to dry it out. Don’t touch it and avoid all contact as it dries.

As you can see, this is a rather involved process. This is the sort of thing that will take a lot of time and attention. You might not have that on your hands. In that case, you need to call for professionals water damage restoration expert to handle it.
